Data loggers for every purpose

Data loggers are reliable helpers for a wide range of applications. Regardless of whether sensitive goods are to be stored correctly or good conditions are to be created for workspaces – with a data logger you always keep an eye on important parameters for monitoring the environment.

Simple solution for collecting essential data

Data loggers can be helpful in many different areas. They indicate whether goods such as pharmaceuticals or food are stored correctly or protect metal parts in electronics that are susceptible to rusting.

In archives that store works of art or documents, the right room climate must be ensured in order to avoid damage to objects.

Environmental data such as temperature and humidity are essential, especially in logistics, where goods are stored and transported. They must always be monitored in order not to impair the quality of the goods.

But a data logger can also provide valuable services in living or work rooms. It indicates whether the room climate is in order and whether a room complies with the occupational health and safety regulations.

Data logger instead of complex individual measurements

But to carry out complex measurements over long periods of time with expensive equipment is not efficient. A data logger can solve this problem. It usually consists of a programmable microprocessor, a memory unit and at least one interface.

For the measurement of environmental data such as temperature and humidity or even vibrations, noise or fine dust pollution, the appropriate sensors are also built in. For example, it is designed to continuously measure and collect data over a long period of time, or to transfer it via the interfaces to a system that processes the data further.

Different application areas for data loggers

One of the most important characteristics of a data logger is continuity. Measurement data must be collected and documented without interruption. In this way they can guarantee verifiable quality control. This is particularly important for some product groups in warehouses but also during transport. The more sensitive the products, the stricter the environmental control must be.

In this guide, we present three different Testo data loggers with different functions that can be used for different purposes. The Testo data loggers have non-volatile memory. This has the advantage that the measurement data is not lost even if the batteries are completely drained. If a battery is replaced too late, you can still keep all data collected up to this point and avoid a gap in the documentation.

Solution 1: Radio data logger system for workspaces

If you want to ensure that offices or other workspaces offer good conditions for productivity and the well-being of employees, you have to pay attention to the right temperature and humidity. Depending on the type of activity, the occupational health and safety ordinance prescribes various limit values that must not be exceeded or fallen short of. For example, it is not allowed to be hotter than 26° in work rooms.

A mini data logger is suitable for checking these and other values in an office. It reliably measures air temperature and relative humidity in offices or storage rooms. The data is transferred to a PC via a USB interface and can be evaluated there. A display shows the current values and whether a limit value is exceeded or not.

The mini data logger from Testo is a good entry-level model for reliably obtaining clarity about the building climate. Up to 16,000 entries can be stored on the data logger.

Solution 2: Data logger system with a higher range of functions

The Testo Saveris 2 data logger system is designed for use in industrial environments, especially for monitoring temperature-sensitive goods such as pharmaceuticals. All collected data is stored directly in the Testo cloud via WLAN. This gives users the opportunity to determine threshold values and set an alarm that notifies them by e-mail or SMS if a value is fallen below or exceeded. In this way, it is possible to detect immediately if, for example, a refrigerator breaks down and to prevent quality losses or even the deterioration of valuable goods.

The batteries have a service life of 24 months and can be replaced themselves. Since the data logger has a housing with IP65, it also offers good protection against dust and water. The NTC temperature sensor is integrated in the device.

The colder the environment, the faster the batteries drain. It is therefore advisable to add sensors to the data logger for data collection in refrigerators. Thanks to their special flat ribbon cable, they are particularly suitable for use in refrigerators because they can easily be pushed through the refrigerator seal. The sensor measures the temperature inside, while the data logger can be mounted outside.

Solution 3: Transport monitoring with mobile data loggers

When transporting sensitive goods such as electronics, art, pharmaceuticals or food, not only temperature and humidity are important. Shocks can also cause damage. A data logger for transport must therefore take this value into account.

The Testo data logger for transport monitoring is activated with a start button. From this point on, it records the data at user-defined time intervals. It is stopped as soon as the Stop button is pressed – with unlimited operating time. The battery life is 120 hours.

The display shows when a limit value has been exceeded. So you can see immediately at the destination whether the transport was unproblematic. A PDF report, which is automatically generated as soon as the device is connected to a PC, provides a closer look. In addition, all data remains on the logger and guarantees that no values can be lost.

The data logger complies with GxP, 21 CFR Part 11 and HACCP.
