USB-C: faster, more powerful and versatile

The trial and error of trying to work out which way to insert the USB plug into the socket is a thing of the past with USB-C. Thanks to its symmetrical design, the plug can be inserted either way, making it more convenient for everyday use. Its robust construction also ensures a longer service life: according to the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) it can withstand up to 10,000 insertion cycles – significantly more than older USB connectors.

Today, USB-C has firmly established itself as the universal connector for a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, monitors and many more besides. However, USB-C offers far more than just a convenient connection. Depending on the specifications, the connector can enable high data transfer rates, fast charging, and the transmission of video and audio signals.

USB-C: A connector type and USB standard – an important distinction

It is a common misconception to equate USB-C with a specific USB standard. In fact, USB-C exclusively refers to the physical design of the connector. The functions supported by a USB-C port depend on the device in question and the USB standard it incorporates.

For example, a USB-C port can perform any combination of the following functions:

  • Transfer data
  • Charge devices or be charged itself
  • Drive monitors via DisplayPort Alt Mode
  • Support Thunderbolt

Therefore, two USB-C ports that appear identical may have different functions.

Consequently, the presence of a USB-C port does not indicate the underlying USB standard.

High-performance power supply with USB Power Delivery

USB-C is used not only for data transfer, but also for power delivery.

If both the charger and the connected device support USB Power Delivery (USB PD), charging power of up to 240 watts is possible. This means that, as well as smartphones and tablets, high-performance laptops, monitors, and docking stations can be reliably powered too.

USB Power Delivery automatically adjusts the voltage and current to match the connected device’s power requirements. This ensures that every compatible device is supplied with the power it needs.

Without USB Power Delivery, a maximum of 15 watts can be transmitted via USB-C.

A single port for data, power and video signals

Depending on the device’s specifications, USB-C can be used to simultaneously transfer data, charge devices, and output video or audio signals. For video signal transmission, many devices support DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode). Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 also use the USB-C connector.

As a result, a single cable is often sufficient to connect a laptop to a monitor while charging the laptop simultaneously.

It is important to note that not every USB-C port supports video transmission. Whether a monitor can be connected directly via USB-C depends on the technical specifications of the devices involved and the cable used. Depending on the combination, an adapter may also be required.

USB-C is becoming the standard for laptops

With Directive (EU) 2022/2380, the European Union introduced a standardised charging port. Since the end of 2024, this has applied to many mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, and headphones. From 28 April 2026, the requirement will also apply to new laptops that can be charged via a cable.

For consumers, this means:

  • Laptops must have at least one USB-C port for charging.
  • If a laptop supports fast charging, the USB Power Delivery open standard must be used for this purpose.
  • Manufacturers may continue to offer additional charging ports, such as round plugs or MagSafe, provided that the laptop can also be charged via USB-C.
  • Standardised labelling on packaging makes it easier to choose suitable chargers.

The EU regulation aims to reduce electronic waste and enable the use of a single charger for as many devices as possible.

Durability and ease of use

One of the greatest strengths of USB-C is the symmetrical design of the connector. This means that it no longer matters which way the plug is inserted. This makes it easier to use while also protecting the connector.

According to the USB Implementers Forum, the connector can withstand up to 10,000 insertion cycles. Mathematically speaking, someone who charges their smartphone once a day would only reach this figure after around 27 years – significantly longer than the typical smartphone lifespan.

Does USB-C automatically mean USB4?

No, USB-C only refers to the connector type. The data transfer rates and functions offered by a USB-C port depend on the supported USB standard and the device in question.

Can I connect a monitor to any USB-C port?

No, to do so the USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt, for example. You can check the device’s technical specifications to see if this is the case.

Can any USB-C cable charge a laptop?

Not necessarily. USB-C cables differ in their maximum supported charging power, amongst other things. To charge a laptop with high power via USB Power Delivery, the cable must be rated for the required power.

Can I use a smartphone charger for my laptop?

This is possible if both the charger and the laptop support USB Power Delivery, and if the charger provides sufficient power. If the power output is too low, however, the laptop will charge more slowly. Under heavy usage, the battery may even continue to discharge despite the charger being connected.
