Known for its keyboards and key switches, CHERRY is an icon in the world of keyboards. At CHERRY, clicking and clacking is not just a form of input, but almost an art form that users can adapt to their individual needs. A few months ago, the German company introduced a new technology that is set to revolutionise the typing experience.
In this guide, you’ll not only find out why gaming enthusiasts are so enthusiastic about mechanical keyboards with CHERRY MX switches. We will also explain why they are just as suitable for professional use as they are for home use. We will also introduce you to the different designs and switches – including the new MX2A switch – so that you can get an overview for yourself.
What are CHERRY MX switches?
With the development of MX technology with Gold Crosspoint contacts, CHERRY has created the leading and most widely used switch technology for mechanical keyboards. These are characterised by their particularly long, guaranteed life of over 100 million keystrokes, their variability and their reliability.
How do the MX switches work?
The MX switch consists of a plunger, which can come in a variety of colours – more on this later. It also includes a spiral spring, an upper housing part, a gold crosspoint contact and finally a lower housing part. Each component is irreplaceable for the unique functionality of the innovative CHERRY MX switches. As already mentioned, there are different versions of the MX switch, which differ not only in the colour of the plunger, but also in their internal mechanisms. The different colours indicate the different levels of force required to operate the switch. There is also a distinction between tactile and linear switches: Tactile switches have a tactile and/or audible pressure point that allows you to perceive when a key is pressed – a characteristic feature of mechanical keyboards that is particularly noticeable in the loud click. Linear switches do not provide this type of feedback.
Color scheme of the full-size MX switches
- CHERRY MX Black is the classic. Particularly accurate, popular for tasks where errors should be avoided. Powerful, direct, linear switching characteristics, without click. This is the first Switch, introduced in 1984.
- CHERRY MX Red is the entry-level model and very popular with gamers due to its high responsiveness. Smooth, direct, linear switching characteristics, no click.
- CHERRY MX Brown is particularly quiet and pleasant when you have to type a lot. The brown version is therefore suitable for open-plan offices. Targeted and noticeable, tactile switching characteristics, without a click.
- CHERRY MX Blue is very precise and great for heavy typists, but is not suitable for open-plan offices. Loud and noticeable, tactile and acoustic switching characteristics, with a click.
- CHERRY MX Silver is 40 percent faster than the other switches, ideal for gamers and anyone who needs fast input. Particularly smooth, direct, linear switching characteristics, without click.
Colorful lighting and silent typing
The CHERRY MX RGB models, which are available in every color variant, provide the appropriate colored background light. Underneath each transparent MX RGB switch there is an LED on the circuit board that can illuminate in the full RGB color spectrum. For users with sensitive ears, CHERRY MX has also brought silent versions onto the market that dampen the typing noises. Red and Black currently offer this option.
Different designs of switches
The switches are available in different sizes, from full-size to low-profile to ultra-low-profile designs. While MX Full Size is available in different color variations with different properties, MX Low Profile aims at a low keyboard height that enables a slim keyboard design and ergonomic working. MX Ultra Low Profile is even flatter and is therefore also suitable for laptops and users who value fast response and reliable input in limited space. What are the advantages of mechanical keyboards?
Thinking about buying a mechanical keyboard? Here are a few more reasons why:
- Durability: Mechanical keyboards are designed to withstand a higher number of keystrokes and are easier to repair.
- Customisation: Keyboards are designed to be customised to suit personal preferences or specific requirements.
- Better response time: The special design of the mechanical switches provides a faster response and a more “fluid” typing experience by reducing the need to depress keys.
- Smoother on the joints: Less force is needed to operate a mechanical keyboard. This reduces the risk of RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury).
- Versatile: CHERRY MX switches are not only very popular with gamers, their wide range of features also make them suitable for a variety of applications in the commercial, industrial and private sectors.
The ideal everyday companion
Most workers spend up to eight hours a day at a keyboard (and in front of a screen). They therefore attach great importance to a PC keyboard that allows reliable and precise input and functions smoothly. CHERRY MX’s product portfolio also includes ready-made keyboards that are ideal for everyday work, but also for private use. The CHERRY KW X ULP keyboard (keyboard layout: German, QWERTZ) combines the aesthetic appearance of modern slim keyboards with the advantages of a mechanical keyboard. MX Ultra Low Profile switches ensure a low overall height.Images: Adobe Stock
