The attack on 900,000 Telekom routers was impressive: Consumers should protect their routers from hacker attacks \u2014 otherwise they risk tampering, loss of data and password theft. For the particularly widespread Fritzbox<\/a> router from AVM, we show you how to secure your Fritzbox \u2014 in just five steps it will be as secure as Fort Knox!<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Step 1: Update firmware to the latest version<\/h2>\n

For the router to be secure, the device software (firmware) must always be at the latest version. The installation of a firmware update is done in a few minutes. For the Fritzbox, this is how you do it: Launch a browser such as Firefox. Tap in the address line \u201chttp:\/\/fritz.box\u201d, press the Enter key and sign in (default password is \u201c0000\u201d).<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the router menu click on \u201cWizard\u201d and \u201cUpdate firmware\u201d or \u201cUpdate\u201d. If a new firmware is available, click on \u201cStart firmware update now\u201d. Note: Some Internet providers such as Unitymedia and Vodafone Kabel Deutschland install updates automatically.<\/p>\n

In this case, you will receive the error message \u201cThe specified URL was not found\u201d.<\/p>\n

Step 2: Activate WPA2 encryption<\/h2>\n

A door lock protects your home, an encryption system protects the home wireless network. Therefore use WPA2 in order to be safe. WPA2 works with all current PCs, notebooks, smartphones and tablets.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How to set up WPA2: Open the router interface as described in step 1 and click on \u201cWiFi\u201d and \u201cSecurity\u201d. If you have not already done so, select \u201cWPA encryption\u201d, so that the entry is highlighted in blue. Then select as the option \u201cWPA2 (CCMP)\u201d as \u201cWPA mode\u201d. \u201cCCMP\u201d is currently considered to be the most secure encryption method. Click on \u201cApply\u201d.<\/p>\n

Step 3: Use a secure WiFi password<\/h2>\n

A secure WiFi password should consist of at least twelve characters, better still even more characters. It is best to choose a random sequence of characters and special characters.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Easy to remember yet secure passwords can be created using phrases: For the Fritzbox something like \u201cMy Fritzbox has been connecting my devices to the Internet since 2016\u201d.<\/p>\n

Which gives you: \u201cMFhbcmdttIs2016\u201d. To change the password: In the Fritzbox menu under \u201cWireless\u201d and \u201cSecurity\u201d enter your new secure password in the field \u201cWiFi Network key\u201d. Click on \u201cApply\u201d.<\/p>\n

You must then also specify the password in your devices that are registered with the WiFi, i.e. all computers, tablets, smartphones, Smart TVs etc.<\/p>\n

Step 4: Ward off attacks from the Web<\/h2>\n

Hackers can attack routers from around the world at the same time over the Internet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Often people use software errors and insecure remote access functions. Therefore, disable the network protocol UPnP in the Fritzbox when you don’t actually need it.<\/p>\n

This is how it works: In the Fritzbox menu, first in the bottom left click on \u201cView: Standard\u201d: This opens the expert settings. Then click on \u201cHome network\u201d, \u201cHome network overview\u201d and \u201cNetwork settings\u201d. Disable here by deselecting the option \u201cAllow access for applications\u201d and confirm with \u201cApply\u201d. Also, check under \u201cInternet\u201d, \u201cAccess\u201d, \u201cPort access\u201d that the function \u201cAll of the devices in the home network may independently change port settings\u201d is not selected.<\/p>\n

If you do not want to access your Fritzbox remotely, it is best to deactivate the remote access. This is how it works: Navigate in the Fritzbox menu to \u201cInternet\u201d, \u201cAccess\u201d and \u201cFRITZ!Box services\u201d. Remove the tick from in front of \u201cInternet access to the FRITZ!Box via HTTPS is enabled\u201d and click on \u201cApply\u201d.<\/p>\n

Step 5: Change the router password<\/h2>\n

If you haven’t already done so, change the password printed on the router label immediately.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The predefined passwords can easily be reconstructed with the technical assistance of hackers. In the Fritzbox menu, under \u201cOverview\u201d click in the top right on the ellipses and select \u201cChange password\u201d.<\/p>\n

As with the WiFi password, the router password should also contain at least twelve characters. If you have set a new password, click on \u201cOK\u201d.<\/p>\n
