The 2026 reichelt Supply Chain Report shows that while European companies are making their supply chains more resilient through automation and AI, economic pressure is mounting due to high costs and geopolitical tensions.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With fewer production shutdowns and a diminished impact from supply bottlenecks, German companies are now better prepared for volatile supply chains than they were a few years ago. According to the annual Supply Chain Report published by reichelt elektronik, which surveyed 1,500 industrial companies in Europe. The overall economic outlook for these companies has nevertheless deteriorated significantly compared to last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fewer downtimes, more pessimism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Companies today are far better prepared for supply disruptions. For example, only one in five companies (21%) now reports having felt a significant impact from supply chain bottlenecks, compared to 27 percent in 2025. This is particularly evident in terms of downtime: Three years ago, machines and operations were idle for an average of 32.9 days; in 2026, that figure had dropped to just 18 days. In addition, nearly a third (28%) of companies were completely spared from downtime. In the previous year, this was true for only 19 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, European companies are looking to the future with greater pessimism. Half (50%) of those surveyed stated that they do not expect the supply situation to change in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason for this pessimism is the increasing number of conflicts negatively impacting global trade. The war between Iran and the U.S. is the biggest concern for companies, with 66 percent expecting further negative effects, closely followed by concerns about Russia\u2019s ongoing war against Ukraine at 62 percent. Many companies (55%) also view the trade conflicts between the EU and China as increasingly worrisome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Price increases and energy costs dominate everyday life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite more stable supply chains, companies are facing increasing economic pressure. Price increases for critical components are the biggest burden for 78 percent of respondents. With last year\u2019s figure at 76 percent, this burden has remained consistently high. Close behind are high energy prices at 73 percent, a 7-percentage-point increase compared to 2025. Rising freight costs (69%) and raw material shortages (60%) are also increasingly seen as challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also reflected in companies\u2019 assessment of the greatest threat to their business model. Ranking first, at 41 percent, are high location costs by international standards, which include energy and labor costs as well as rent. Next are excessive dependence on raw materials from China (31%), dependence on imports of critical components such as semiconductors (31%), and bureaucratic hurdles within the EU (31%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Semiconductors remain critical; network technology takes center stage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The situation regarding the procurement of critical components varies from component to component. As was the case last year, semiconductors remain the most affected by shortages (38% in 2026 vs. 35% in 2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation has worsened for replacement parts for equipment and machinery. Here, the percentage of those affected increased slightly from 33 percent in the previous year to 35 percent now. Procurement of servers, NAS systems, and networking equipment appears to also have become more challenging. Fifteen percent of companies reported having encountered procurement problems \u2013 a significant increase compared to 2025 (9%). However, worries have eased for cables and hoses, where the proportion of affected companies has dropped from 23% to 18%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automation and AI make supply chains more resilient<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To organize their supply chains more efficiently, companies are increasingly turning to automation and AI. 57 percent reported using automated systems \u2013 for example, in inventory management such as goods receipt and shipment, or for automatic reordering. In contrast, 40 percent rely on business intelligence systems, for example for smart supply chain planning and forecasting. Strikingly, agentic AI systems for automated decision-making are now also in use at 32 percent of companies, while25 percent use robots or autonomous guided vehicles in logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

44 percent of companies see potential applications for these systems in inventory optimization and warehouse management. Following closely, at 36 percent, are the automatic detection of errors or emergencies and support in resolving them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No economic relief in sight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe findings of the latest supply chain report show that European companies have learned from recent years and made their supply chains more resilient,\u201d says Christian Reinwald, Head of Product Management & Marketing at reichelt elektronik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHowever, rising costs for energy and critical components, as well as geopolitical conflicts, are shifting the pressure from supply capacity to the economic environment. It is therefore crucial for companies to structure their supply chains not only to be stable, but also economically viable and flexible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the annually published study conducted by OnePoll on behalf of reichelt elektronik, 1500 European industrial companies from Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Netherlands were surveyed in September 2026 regarding the state of their supply chains.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
