Security vulnerability: Only four percent of Germans use an alarm system

The number of burglaries in Germany reached an all-time high in 2015 and a move away from this trend is not imminent. Nevertheless few people rely on an alarm system: Just four percent of the Germans have secured their house or apartment. This is the result of a current survey.

In 2015, burglars struck 167,136 times in Germany. This is an increase of almost ten percent compared to 2014, a year which recorded the most break-ins for 15 years. But only a few Germans rely on alarm system as a form of protection: Only four percent have secured their apartment or home in this way. This is demonstrated by a representative survey, which TNS Emnid carried out on behalf of reichelt elektronik.

A great deal of interest in alarm systems

The survey also shows: Even people without an alarm system have a clear idea about how they would secure their apartment or house. There are hardly any differences between the responses from those people with an alarm system and those without:

  • 56 percent of both groups would choose the classic outdoor alarm siren for their alarm signal.
  • An emergency call to the security service would be a good feature for many of the respondents (users: 53 percent/non-users: 60 percent).
  • The following areas are secured or should be secured: Front door (users: 96 percent/non-users: 85 percent), windows on the ground floor (74 percent/67 percent), patio door (64 percent/66 percent), balcony door (64 percent/59 percent), cellar door (54 percent/49 percent) and cellar window (48 percent/46 percent).
  • 78 percent of users and 71 percent of non-users consider sensors on windows and doors to be the best type of security. Motion detectors (73 percent/60 percent) and cameras (38 percent/61 percent) are also considered to be effective.
  • Although digitalisation provides numerous options, only a small proportion of respondents have connected their alarm system and home automation or think it makes sense to do so: Users: 21 percent; non-users: 23 percent.

1003 people were interviewed in total. Except in the case of the question as to whether the respondent owned an alarm system or not, multiple answers possible.
