There is a constant conflict in the printer industry between the manufacturers of original inks and the suppliers of compatible alternatives. Many printer manufacturers use firmware updates and special chips to make it difficult to use third party inks. This is to ensure that consumers only use original inks, which are often significantly more expensive than their compatible counterparts.
The use of chips in printer cartridges is a technical measure that recognises whether a cartridge is from the original manufacturer. If it is not, the printer may refuse to use it or issue warnings. This not only leads to inconvenience for the end user, but also restricts freedom of choice and the possibility of cost savings.
KMP’s answer: Remanufactured ink cartridges with hybrid chip
The German company KMP offers an innovative solution to this problem: hybrid chips. The result of intensive research and development, these chips are resistant to the original manufacturer’s dynamic protection function. They are designed to bypass the printer’s detection software by pretending to be original cartridges. This allows consumers to easily monitor ink levels and firmware updates will not affect their functionality. This allows the use of lower cost, compatible inks without compromising functionality or print quality.
The benefits of this technology are many. For consumers, it means significant cost savings, as remanufactured cartridges with hybrid chips are often a fraction of the price of original inks. In addition, the use of such products contributes to sustainability by reducing waste and CO2 emissions. The CO2 savings compared to a possible new production are analysed using a certified methodology according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020. In 2022 and 2023, more than 1 million kilograms of CO2 could already be saved.
KMP’s innovative hybrid chips are therefore not only a technological achievement, but also an important step towards consumer freedom and environmental protection. They offer a practical solution to the dilemma faced by many printer owners who have to choose between high costs and sustainability. With such technologies, the market for printer supplies will become more democratic and consumer-friendly, which could lead to healthier competitive dynamics in the long run.
