DECT-Repeater: Mehr Reichweite beim schnurlosen Telefonieren

DECT repeater: More range for cordless phones

The range of cordless phones with up to 300 metres is actually quite high. However, thick walls or ceilings can cause problems. If the connection to the control centre is bad, this results in poor call quality or even in connection interruptions. A solution here is a DECT repeater, which can often even double the range of each base station. The repeater takes the signals from the base and forwards them on.

Optimum reception anywhere in the house

For the popular Gigaset cordless phones there is the DECT repeater GIGASET RP HX. For Fritzbox routers, which also serve as a telephone exchange, AVM offers the FritzDECT Repeater 100 model.

Both repeaters enable multiple calls at the same time — even in HD quality. The manufacturers Gigaset and AVM guarantee the best listening security thanks to built-in encryption.

While the user is on the phone, the transmission changes between the repeater as well as the router or base station (handover) depending on the location: This guarantees the best possible reception at any place in the house.

As a rule, up to 6 DECT repeaters can be connected to one base station — for example, one on the first floor and one in the cellar. Important to note: Repeaters may not be connected in series, but only in a star pattern around the base station. In addition, you cannot place the repeaters closer than ten metres apart.

Repeaters only consume a little power in standby mode. The FritzDECT Repeater 100 uses up only a little more than one watt — and is therefore hardly noticeable on the electricity bill.

Even in operation, the consumption does not go beyond 2 W. The same also applies to the majority of other DECT repeaters.

Setting up the FritzDECT Repeater 100: This is how it works

Set-up is also very simple. Some repeaters have to be plugged into the wall socket for use, they then connect largely automatically to the base station. The AVM model for Fritzbox routers works slightly differently:

  1. Log in to your Fritzbox via browser ). In the menu click on “DECT” and then on “Base station”. Then under “Security” select—if not already selected—“Only allow secure DECT connections (recommended)” and click on “Apply”. The router must now be restarted.
  2. At the top of your Fritz Box now hold down the “DECT” button until the “Info” light (on some models instead of the “DECT” light) starts to flash. The socket will then automatically register on the Fritzbox. The DECT light will go out until the next call.

Now insert the FritzDECT Repeater 100 into the socket where the amplifier is to be operated.

You know that the repeater has good wireless reception if the DECT LED is continuously lit. If it is flashing then the connection is too weak. In this case you must plug the repeater into an electrical socket that is closer to the router.
