Light for on the move: torches lit in detail

You always need a torch – whether at home, camping, on a hiking tour or on an evening walk. Fortunately, modern torches have little in common with the clunky torches of the past, especially because of LED technology.

The perfect torch type

In the past, it was almost exclusively expensive models that offered enough power and robustness for meaningful use. Inexpensive models drove us to despair with their lousy light output, constantly empty batteries and sensitivity. If a little moisture got into the housing, a total loss was usually inevitable. But heavy battery cells and lousy light bulbs are a thing of the past. There have been enormous advances in luminosity, energy efficiency, compactness, lightness and design in recent years because of LED technology. However, the range has also grown massively, making it easy to get overwhelmed when buying. We tell you what matters.

Luminosity: Lumens above all?

Manufacturers are always trying to outdo each other in the luminosity of torches. However, manufacturers’ specifications on lumens and light ranges should be treated with some caution. The pure lumen values are difficult to compare. Especially with no-name manufacturers who advertise fabulous lumen values, caution is advised. In general, the luminous intensity of a torch should not be less than 250 lumens in order to be able to see something in the dark even at medium distances. Levels above 1,000 lumens are rarely necessary for private use; between 600 and 1,000 lumens are sufficient for almost all cases.

Endurance & battery technology

How the batteries or rechargeable cells last depends to a large extent on the light intensity. Good torches should last at least five to ten hours at a time. With particularly high-intensity torches, despite LED technology, sometimes it is already over after two hours, and with models with high-performance lamps sometimes after less than one hour. In general, torches with rechargeable accumulators are preferable to those with batteries. The higher purchase price compared to cheaper models usually pays for itself quickly. Hybrid versions that can be operated with rechargeable batteries as well as with standard batteries as a backup power source are also practical. This is particularly advantageous when you are on the move for longer periods of time, for example for hiking.

Handling and extra functions

When choosing a suitable torch, other criteria are important, such as a good grip so that the torch does not slip out of your hand. A belt clip is practical for transport. Factors such as weight and size are particularly important if the torch is to be used frequently on the move. If you want a torch that is very compact and can easily be carried in your pocket on your body, you usually have to accept a lower luminosity.

For hiking and similar outdoor activities, a robust, waterproof housing is a plus. It should also be possible to adjust the torch’s light intensity; three levels are sufficient. Of course, a stepless setting is ideal. The Morse code and SOS functions offered by some torches should be dispensable for most users.
