Defying the forces of nature – how you can protect your house safely and smartly from wind and weather

When the weather takes on extreme features and becomes a potential danger, the house and yard must be well protected. After all, you want to feel safe and comfortable in it, even when the wind whistles outside. However, not only stormy weather, but also sunshine and heat can make protective measures necessary. In order to avoid acute distress, it can be useful to be prepared for such cases by attaching various products to the house.

By the way, these also offer protection when you are not at home – thanks to smart technology, these devices can be operated from anywhere via a mobile device. Some of them have a built-in automatic system that reacts automatically to weather conditions. Here are a few tools to help you be prepared and react quickly to any weather condition.

Roller shutter actuators protect windows and doors

The Homematic IP roller shutter actuator is an ideal system for protecting windows and patio doors from rain, frost, strong winds or sunlight. It can be ideally integrated into the system with other Homematic IP products.

It can be used to control all brand switches of roller shutters and awnings with a standard tubular motor. The compact roller shutter actuator is installed in the flush-mounted box and can then be integrated into existing switch series using an adapter.

After installation, the user can configure his personal weekly profiles and carry out further control via the Homematic IP App, via the remote control associated with the system or directly via the buttons on the switch itself. The individual weekly profiles enable the time-controlled raising and lowering of the connected roller shutters or awnings.

The roller shutter actuator offers maximum convenience in controlling these protective elements on the house against rain, frost, wind or sun – conveniently and from any location you choose.

Blind actuators offer even more comfort and precision

The blind actuator is also from the Smart Home series of Homematic IP. It is also installed in the flush-mounted box and is suitable for all models with classic tubular motors. In addition to the control options of the roller shutter actuator, the blind actuator can also be used to adjust the slat position of venetian blinds and Venetian blinds. It can also be operated via the Homematic IP App, the remote control or directly at the switch or integrated into other smart home systems, such as Amazon Alexa. Various other smart home solutions are also compatible. It should be noted here that a neutral conductor is required to attach the blind actuator. Ideally, this should already be available.

The ideal complement: a weather sensor

Weather sensors are also available from the Smart Home series from Homematic IP. They are available in Basic, Plus and Pro versions and are installed outside the house, for example on the roof. The sensor then records and transmits weather data such as temperature, humidity, brightness, wind speed and the daily sunshine duration. This data can be queried and evaluated precisely and reliably via the Homematic IP App.

The weather data can also be linked to specific actions of other devices. For example, when a certain temperature or brightness is reached, the shutters, blinds or an awning are lowered or extended. Depending on which smart home components the weather sensor is connected to, different scenarios of automated control of these devices are possible.

A big plus point in terms of practicability: the weather sensor is powered by its own battery and does not need to be connected to the house’s power supply system. The data is communicated via radio technology. This means that no cables need to be laid to install the sensor. Everything needed to mount the sensor, including an approximately 1.6 metre long stainless steel pole, is included. In addition, this autonomous operation offers the option of changing the location of the fragile sensor.

The Plus version offers the added ability to sense rain, the time of day when it starts and the amount of water in the rain. This can be particularly useful for garden owners with water-sensitive plants around the house – or anyone who likes to have their laundry dried outside. For smart home professionals there is also the Pro version. In addition to the capabilities of the Basic and Plus models, it is able to indicate the wind direction as well as the fluctuation range of the wind direction. For all those who want to know exactly – for example, because they are following certain outdoor activities or simply out of fascination with technology – this weather sensor really does offer everything your heart desires.

Equipped for every eventuality – making your home safe

Changes in the weather often come quickly and, despite weather forecasts, relatively unexpectedly. Whether you’re on holiday, visiting friends or in the house itself – with these weather-specific Smart Home elements, your home is prepared for the current weather situation at the touch of a button. Whether preventing frost on the window, protecting the house from rain and storms, controlling the temperature with sun protection products such as awnings and venetian blinds: with these Smart Home elements, the house is always prepared to offer the perfect temperature and maximum security in any weather. Moreover, they are not only easy to install, but also uncomplicated and convenient to control.
