The force sensors in the Honeywell FSS-SMT series are among the most reliable force sensors available on the market. This is illustrated with a nominal value of 20 million MCTF (average number of load cycles) at 25°C [77°F]. This SMT sensor (Surface Mount Technology) enables automatic mounting on a printed circuit board, which often means that the customer's assembly costs can be reduced.
The FSS-SMT series force sensor is designed for precise and reliable force measurement in a standard compact casing. The sensor contains measurement technology from Honeywell, which uses a special piezo-resistive micromechanical silicon measurement element. The non-reinforced and non-compensated Wheatstone bridge circuit with low power consumption enables a stable mV output in the entire force measurement area.
The operation of the sensors is based on the fact that the resistance changes from the piezo resistances integrated in the silicon when these are bent by force. The sensor transfers the force applied using the stainless steel ball directly to the silicon measuring element. The resistance value varies in proportion to the amount of force applied. This change in the results of the resistance of the circuit leads to a corresponding change to the mV output.

Due to the slight bend (typically about 30 µm in the entire area) measurement errors are reduced.
Through the direct mechanical coupling of the actuating ball with the measuring element, coupling errors are reduced and the mechanical hysteresis is kept to an absolute minimum.
A nominal value of 20 million MCTF (average number of load cycles) at 25°C (77°F), with differences depending on the application, supports a long-term consistent output and reduces the need for a repair or replacement.
The sensitivity is increased, without affecting the signal integrity, and this reduces measurement errors and keeps system noises low.
Ratiometric output compensates for variations in the electrical power supply, and only a few radiometric errors occurs.
