The Shuttle accessory WLN-C is a wireless LAN kit consisting of a mini PCI Express card with two antennas and corresponding antenna cables. This accessory is intended to equip compatible Shuttle PCs with a wireless LAN function according to the IEEE 802.11b/g/n standard. The data transfer rate is up to 300 MBit/s and the WPA2 security standard with AES encryption is supported by hardware.

Advantages over a wireless LAN USB stick:
  • The mini PCIe card is installed in the PC and is therefore better protected against tampering and theft.

  • The integrated solution is visually more stylish.

  • For a high level of efficiency, the antenna should be at least 6 cm in length (= corresponds to a half-wavelength at 2.4 GHz). Here the typical USB stick is at a disadvantage.

  • The use of two antennas enables two signals to be transmitted on a radio channel in the same frequency range, which increases the speed and range.

  • The protocol of PCIe cards is less complex than that of USB and typically results in less processor load.

More information on wireless LAN technology:
  1. The WEP and WPA encryption standards are considered insecure and should no longer be used. The WPA2 standard in combination with a complex password is generally recommended. For legal reasons, it is recommended that the wireless LAN is blocked to unknown users, because the Federal Court of Justice (BGH Ref. I ZR 121/08) has decided: Anyone who does not secure his wireless LAN in accordance with the market standard may receive a warning in relation to the illegal downloads of other users.

  2. If the wireless LAN coverage is not sufficient, use of a wireless repeater, which transmits the desired data packets further, can help and simply requires a power outlet. However, this increases the traffic on the network and halves the transmission speed for the stations that operate on the network. This is because each data packet will be transmitted twice.
