The Raspberry Pi concept
The idea for the Raspberry arose in 2006 when a group of computer experts at the University of Cambridge began to take notice of the declining number of IT students and their limited prior knowledge. In order to provide students an opportunity to experiment and program, the group established a foundation and developed Raspberry Pi. This computer would be able to connect directly to a keyboard and a screen or a television. The developers considered the multimedia capability of the computer to be an important aspect, because they assumed it was a better means of appealing to the interest of children and young adults.
There are several available versions of Raspberry Pi, which has already sold by the millions. The mini PC is used in schools and in hobby applications for media centres, weather stations, etc.
There are a number of open source operating systems for Raspberry Pi. They are installed from an SD memory card.
Basic features of the Raspberry Pi types
Type A+ and Type B+ of Raspberry Pi are both based on a circuit board the size of a credit card. Therefore, they are also called single-board computers. The Raspberry Pi A+ and Raspberry Pi B+ have a 700 MHz processor (Type A+ with 265 and Type B+ with 512 MB RAM), a graphic board, a programmable interface, several connections (such as USB< FBAS, HDMI, audio 3.5 mm jack), and an SD (SDHC and SDXC)/MMC/SDIO card reader.
The GPIO interface has 40 pins, which provide various voltages. They are partly designed for the power supply of the Raspberry and are partly freely assignable.
The latest mini PC is the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. It has 1 GB RAM, an ARM Cortex A7 Quad-Core processor with 900 MHz, and a GPIO interface with 40 pins. A particular highlight of the single-board computer is the potential use of the future Windows 10 on Raspberry Pi 2 B.
